A frenectomy or lip or tongue tie is a surgical procedure that corrects tongue or lip ties. This dental treatment involves modifying or cutting a frenum - a fold of connective tissue that links two areas. A frenum can join your tongue to the lower jaw or join the lips to the gums of the upper jaw.
Usually, the frenum in your mouth doesn't cause any problems. But if they are too short or thick, they may pose oral health issues. In infants, frenum abnormalities can cause issues with breastfeeding and even lead to poor speech development.
There are two types of orals frenectomies:
Labial frenectomy, also known as a maxillary frenectomy, labial treatment eliminates the band of tissue that joins the upper gums to the front teeth. This procedure is used to treat lip-ties.
This treatment corrects the band of tissue joining your tongue to the lower jaw. A lingual frenectomy is used to treat tongue ties.
